What is Giclée
fine art printing?

PERFECT PHOTO & ART PRINT REPRODUCTION

ART PRINTS AT THEIR FINEST

Fine art printing is also often referred to by the phrase Giclée printing.

This is a term fairly recently coined by print maker Jack Duganne to describe fine art prints made on inkjet printers.  Whilst it originally referred to prints made on a modified Iris printer, it now encompasses the broad range of fine art inkjet prints. It is often used by artists, galleries, and print shops to denote high quality printing but the use of the term is totally unregulated.

To combat the word Giclée being used by anyone who prints, some brands have created their own regulated measurement of quality, whereby printers are tested with regards to their processes, finished prints and service to determine whether they are allowed to display the particular mark of quality and authenticity concerned.

What does giclée mean and what are giclées?

It’s a French word meaning “to spray ink” or “to spray on” and is sometimes referred to as the “Iris” (after the original machine that produced the print). Developed in 1989 as a digital method of fine art printing, it is the The Trail Of Tears, fine art Giclée latest exciting new ground-breaking technological advancement in the world of Fine Art Printing with a resolution higher than the traditional lithography print and a color range wider than a serigraph.

Often referred to as Giclée printing, it has its own set of standards predominantly based around colour vibrancy along with lightness and fastness across the colour gamut. Although these standards also apply to the world of Black & White printing too, where the true representation of contrast and tone is vitally important. Giclée images are usually printed on high end art and photographic paper, often of archival quality and using pigment inks such as those found in Epson Large Format Printer Range.

Technological advancements in the world of inkjet printing, together with bespoke profiling services such as the one provided by Tetenal UK have brought high quality Giclée printing within the grasp of a wider audience. Investing in an Epson Large Format Printer enables businesses to expand their services to a wider variety of clients, particularly those involved in the world of high quality reproductions and those who work to strict deadlines.
